The IRD settings behind the NZ tools

IRD brackets, the 2026 KiwiSaver settings, and ACC levies decide take-home pay, retirement balances, and loan obligations under current rules.

PAYE and the ACC earner levy

PAYE runs from the first dollar across five brackets (10.5% to 39% above $180,000), with the 1.75% ACC earner levy on top up to $156,641 of earnings. Because there is no tax-free threshold, effective rates at low incomes are higher than Australians expect, while the 39% top rate starts at a threshold well below top rates elsewhere.

KiwiSaver accumulation under the 2026 settings

From April 2026, the default is 3.5% employee plus 3.5% employer (less ESCT), with the government adding 25c per dollar of member contributions up to $260.72 a year. Balances compound inside PIE tax at your PIR, capped at 28%. The rate rise to 4% in 2028 is already legislated, so the projection tools model the step-ups rather than assuming today's rate forever.

Mortgage and student loan mechanics

NZ mortgages compound monthly with rates typically fixed for 1-5 year terms, so repayment calculators here stress different refix rates rather than assuming one rate for 30 years. Student loans are interest-free onshore but accrue 5.6% after 184 days overseas, with fixed annual obligations by balance tier. The single most expensive thing a departing graduate can do is ignore the first missed instalment.
